Oraqix
Leah Brawn, Morgan Tittarelli, Danielle Van Bendegem Goal:The dental hygienist will understand the basics of Oraqix.
(drugs.com, 2010)
Oraqix is a needle free subgingival anesthetic. It is indicated for topical application in periodontal pockets for moderate pain during scaling and/or root planning. It was created by Dentsply in September of 2004. This product can be administered by a registered dental hygienist.

Contents
One cartridge of Oraqix contains 1.7g of gel. The gel contains lidocaine (2.5%) and prilocaine gel (2.5%) in a 1:1 ratio based on weight. It also contains poloaamen 188 purified, poloxomer 427 purified Hydrochloric acid and purified water which act as thermosetting agents. These agents allow the liquid anesthetic to become gel at body temperature.
Individual cartridges are distribted in a blister pack that also contains a blunt-tipped applicator. Each carton contains 20 cartridges and 20 blunt-tipped applicators.
Contraindications
Oraqix is contraindicated in clients with a known history of hypersensitivity to local anesthetics of amide type or to any other component of the product. Clients with Congenital or idiopathic methemoglobinemia.
How to Use
One of cartridge (1.7g) or less is sufficient for one quadrant. A maximum dose of 5 cartridges (8.5g) can be administered as needed.
Oraqix is applied on the gingival margin around the selected tooth using the blunt-tipped applicator.
After waiting 30 seconds, the periodontal pocket is then filled with Oraqix until it becomes visible at the gingival margin.
The dental professional will wait another 30 seconds before starting treatment. Delaying the time before starting the procedure does not enhance the anesthetic effect.
The scaling and root planing procedure may begin 30 seconds after the application of Oraqix to the periodontal pocket. Anesthetic effect, as assessed by probing of pocket depths, has a duration of approximately 20 minutes (individual patient overall range 14-31 minutes).
(Desert Dental, n.d.) After Use
The Oraqix dispenser can be steam autoclaved after use. It has to be cooled at room temperature after being autoclaved. If the dispenser is warm the Oraqix liquid will change to the gel form and it will be unable to be dispensed. The plastic may discolor after repeatedly being put through the autoclave but this does not affect the function of the dispenser. If disinfectant solution is used spray it on a clean towel or cloth and then wipe the dispenser. Do not spray the disinfectant directly on the surface, do not immerse in disinfectant or any solution.
